Statistics for eMule users

Written and collected by birk

December 16th 2003 I created this thread asking people to write 6 stats for me to do some statistical tests on. Up until February 6th 2004 I had gotten 87 useful replies which were more than I had ever hoped for. The thread actually had more views than the forum rules! Sadly the stats doesn’t follow known probability distributions leaving common statistical test useless in most cases which then limits my possible findings. Nonetheless I think there are some interesting results among some of the findings.

The average user...
  • has an internet connection with 1312kbps download speed and 353kbps upload speed (1312 kbps/353 kbps line). This gives the average user an asymmetric line with a ratio of almost 4:1 in favor of download speed.
  • has a maximum upload limit of 27.36 kB/s set in eMule’s settings corresponding to 70.99 % of the entire upload capacity.
  • has a maximum download limit of 129.38 kB/s set in eMule’s settings corresponding to 84.83 % of the entire download capacity.
  • has an average cumulative upload speed of 19.41 kB/s.
  • downloads at an average cumulative speed of 15.30 % of the entire internet connection download speed and 24.03 % of the download limit set in eMule’s settings.
  • has an average cumulative download speed of 15.81 kB/s.
  • uploads at an average cumulative speed of 60.52 % of the entire internet connection upload speed and 84.80 % of the upload limit set in eMule’s settings.
  • has a cumulative UL:DL ratio of 1.26:1.
Other observations:
  • Almost 1/3 of the respondents (27) have an internet connection with 512 kbps download speed.
  • A little more than 1/2 of the respondents (49) have an internet connection with either an upload speed of 128 kbps or 256 kbps.
  • A little less than 1/2 of the respondents (38) have a maximum upload speed of somewhere between 10 kB/s and 16 kB/s.
  • Almost 2/3 of the respondents (54) have an average cumulative upload speed somewhere between 0 kB/s and 15 kB/s.
  • Almost 2/3 of the respondents (54) have an average cumulative download speed somewhere between 0 kB/s and 15 kB/s.
Lots of thanks goes to the people who participated in this. The response has been overwhelming!
